BirdSafe Rapid City is a local, community-powered effort to reduce bird-window collisions. Browse the website to learn a bit more about the issue and what we are doing to address it. You can get involved by adopting a survey route, submitting reports of injured or dead birds, or committing to bird-friendly steps like treating windows or reducing lights during migration season. Every report helps, and every action matters. We’re glad you’re here.
It begins with a soft thud.
You look around and see a bird on the ground – stunned, injured, or possibly even dead. Every year, over one billion birds die from window collisions in the United States. That’s about three birds for every person in the United States, every year. In the time it took you to read these sentences, dozens of birds will have hit a window.
Most of these collisions happen at homes and low-rise buildings. It isn’t a skyscraper or big city problem – it is a home, neighborhood, office park, and school problem. It is a Rapid City problem.
North America has lost nearly 30% of its bird population since 1970, and building collisions are one of the major threats. But there is good news – bird-window collisions are one of the most preventable threats to bird populations. Simple, affordable changes like making glass more visible to birds or reducing nighttime lights can reduce collisions by up to 95%.
Protecting birds doesn’t require massive changes or restoration work. It can start with awareness and local action. That’s why BirdSafe Rapid City exists – to help our city become a safe passageway for birds.
